LIST OF STANDARDS

EN 397 Industrial safety helmets. The standard specifies constructional requirements and protective parameters, test methods and marking requirements for protective helmets for industry. Mandatory and additional requirements for protective parameters are established.

Mandatory requirements

  • shock-absorbing capacity (the impact energy transmitted to the headform shall not exceed 5 kN during a 5 kg impact from a height of 1 m)
  • penetration resistance (a 3 kg impactor from a height of 1 m shall not deform the helmet such that it touches the headform)

flame resistance (the flame of the torch, at an angle of 45 degrees from the vertical, should be at a distance of 50 to 100 mm and in contact with the top of the shell for 10 seconds. The helmet shell must not burn and spread flame for more than 5 s after it has been set aside)

Additional requirements:

  • cushioning capacity at very low temperatures of -20°C or -30°C
  • shock-absorbing capacity at very high temperatures of + 150°C
  •  electroinsulation - 440 Vac
  •  lateral deformation - LD
  • molten metal splash - MM
Durability of helmets
The date of manufacture of the helmet is stamped on the inside of the shell (usually on the visor). It is coded in the form of three discs. An arrowhead placed in the centre of each disc indicates the year, month and day of manufacture respectively. The helmet retains its full protective properties for 2 years from the date of use, but no longer than 3 years from the date of manufacture.
